Server Side Code dependent on JavaScript

Is there a way I can launch a Server Side function from JavaScript?

On a Button Click, I am using JavaScript to print to current page. When the print has been sent, I want to run a Server Side Function to update a record (which also changes the screen so I have to wait until it prints to run the server side function).

Thanks.I imagine in your JS function, you could print and then do a postback to the server?

I would definitely go with the <asp:Button> in your case and use code
behind. This makes it easy to hook up your code if you are using an IDE
like VS.Net and will seperate your code from your UI. Good luck! Ken.

Server Side Controls in ASP.NET

Hi,

I have an aspx page with some server side textboxes.

I have a button onmy page which allows users to add data
to a database.

In my onclick event for my button when I try and get teh
value from the textbox using..

Dim myString as String = textbox1.text

...it is blank.

When I do a..

Dim myString = Request.Form("textbox1")

...I get the value the user enetered.

I have declared my textbox as a control in my codebehind.

And it is an asp.net textbox.

Any ideas why this is?

This is baffling me.

When your page is loaded, checl the HTML source of your page. Your
hidden button will not be rendered at all.

Instead, you can convert your button to a aspx button and add
Javascript event to it from the code behind using

Add this line of code to your page load event.
ButtonName.Attributes.add("onClick","return onComplete()")

Now when you click on your button it will raise the onclick event on
the client side and will call onComplete Javascript function. Inside
the Javascript if you return false, the form will not be submitted and
the server side event of your button will not fire. If you return
true, form will be submitted to the server and your button's onclick
event will be fired on the server.

a server side html button and invoked a post back event on close of
browser something like
__doPostBack('btnUnlock',''); What I realised this is unreliable as the
operation is yet not completed when the browser has closed and
essentially the thread would have been killed. Is there any way in
javascript wherein I post a message to the server, wait for the response
and then the window closes something like send message and wait for the
response.

server side or client side page?

a page that contain a validation control and starting a storeProcedures when the user click on a button --is considered as a client side page or as a server side page?
it seems to me that in asp.net everthing is server side, where are the client side pages?

The sp is server side, but the validation can be on or the other, depending on how it's coded.
ASP.Net has it's validations, so it's server side when using them.
But you can also make validations via JavaScript, so that would be client side.

because i know that if any of the validators are found to be on error the submission of the form to the server is cancelled...
so is there something that is done on the client side in asp.net?

Yes the RequiredFieldValidator does the client side validation

You can do so many things on client side and you should do so many things on client side to minimize postbacks if possible. So what exactly is that you are asking. Usually you use javascript to do client side stuff..

A webpage physically is considered a client side output for the asp.net server side processing. Asp.net uses browser to show its output to the user in the form of a web page. So, a webpage is a client side entity. Server wouldnt know anything about it after it outputs the html into the browser. Now, when the user clicks on the button, the page gets postback to the server. In here there are several things that goes on. The event of user clicking the button will be a client side event, and the page postbacks and server does some processing in response to the user action, which is button click event.

Answering your question, calling a Stored Procedure is a Server Side call.
A page can contain server as well as client side technologies.
